London Underground has confirmed its intention to award the Northern line extension design and build contract to Ferrovial Agroman Laing O’Rourke.

The JV was named as the preferred bidder for the project in July. The £1 billion scheme will see the Northern line extended beyond Kennington to Nine Elms and Battersea.

Following a mandatory 10-day standstill period, Ferrovial Agroman Laing O’Rourke will be awarded the main £500 million construction contract.

The project is yet to receive final approval from the government. A decision is expected to be announced in the autumn and if successful, the extension could be open by 2020.

Mike Brown MVO, the managing director of London Underground, said: “This is an important step in ensuring the delivery of this vital extension which will significantly improve transport links in the area.  It is vital that our proposal is delivered cost effectively for our passengers, taxpayers and the local Boroughs and developers who are helping to fund the extension.”
