Aubagne’s new free-to-ride tramway has opened to passengers.

The first section of Aubagne’s light rail network between Le Charrel and Pôle d’échange d’Aubagne, the city’s bus station, was inaugurated on August 30.

The network, which will be operated by Transdev, will be served by Alstom Citadis Compact trams -the livery of which has been designed by artist Hervé di Rosa with the help of local children.

In 2016, Aubagne’s tram system should be extended from Pôle d’échange d’Aubagne to Les Paluds, and then again in 2019 from the bus station to La Penne.

Aubagne’s ‘Compact’ tram is just 22 metres long but can carry up to 146 passengers.

Like the city’s bus service, the tram will be free to ride. The project is 40 per cent funded by the state and regions.
