The Connecting Sydney consortium has been named as the preferred bidder to build and operate the CBD and South East Light Rail project.

In its bid, the consortium said it could deliver a higher capacity system and reduce the construction time needed on one of the city’s busiest roads, George Street.

Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian did, however, admit that the proposals would increase the overall cost of delivering the new system.

The CBD and South East Light Rail network will stretch for 12 kilometres around the city centre connecting up Circular Quay and Central, the Moore Park sporting and entertainment precinct and Sydney Football Stadium, Randwick Racecourse, the University of NSW and Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick.

The Connecting Sydney consortium includes Transdev Sydney, Alstom Transport Australia, Acciona Infrastructure Australia and Capella Capital.

The contract is expected to be finalised by the end of the year.
