Siemens and Thales are to work together to install the signalling and telecommunication systems along a 340-kilometre stretch of high-speed railway in Northern Spain.

The €510 million contract includes the installation of ETCS Level 2 signalling, wheel detectors and axle counting systems, an automatic train protection and control system, telecommunication and control systems, and maintenance of the systems for 20 years.

The section of railway between Olmedo and Ourense forms part of the Madrid – Galicia high-speed rail corridor – an electrified double-track railway designed for maximum operating speeds of 350 km/h.

In 2011, work was completed on the Ourense, Santiago and A Coruña section of the route. Set to be commissioned in 2018, the Olmedo-Ourense segment will complete the high-speed link with Galicia.
