The city of Utrecht has awarded the infrastructure and rolling stock contracts for a new eight-kilometre light rail line.

Royal BAM Group will begin building €440 million Uithof Line next year, ready to begin passenger service in mid-2018.

As well as the main construction contract, the city government has awarded Spanish manufacturer CAF a contract for 27 low-floor trams. The units will be delivered from January 2017 to Utrecht’s Nieuwegein depot.

Officials hope to conclude the contract awards before Christmas following a mandatory standstill period.

BAM will install tracks, overhead catenary and erect nine stops along the new line.
