The creation of a new Spanish rail safety body has been approved by Royal Decree.

The Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Ferroviaria (State Railway Safety Agency) will be responsible for the supervision of safety standards across all areas including infrastructure, rolling stock, staff and operations.

As well as issuing operating licenses and safety certification for new lines and rolling stock, the agency will have the power to suspend or revoke licenses.

Spain’s Ministry of Development backed the creation of an independent rail safety authority in the wake of the Santiago de Compostela crash in 2013 that killed 79.

The agency will sit on working groups of the European Rail Agency (ERA) and other national and international groups which discuss issues of safety and interoperability.
