Ground broken on Wolfurt freight expansion

Austrian Transport Minister Alois Stoeger has broken ground a €66 million upgrade and expansion of the Wolfurt rail freight terminal.

Between now and 2018, ÖBB is leading a substantial three-phase development of the site in order to double the terminal’s current capacity.

Part funded by the European Union, the footprint of Wolfurt will be increased from 72,000 square metres to 106,000 square metres. The development will create three new sidings for container traffic, four new container loading tracks and additional container storage space.

Since opening in 1982, the terminal has seen freight traffic increase significantly. The terminal now handles as many containers a month as it did in a whole year in 1982.
