Northern Rail has overhauled the first of its new electric Class 319 trains.

Northern Rail, a Serco-Abellio joint venture, has unveiled the first of 20 electric multiple units (EMU) it received from First Capital Connect last summer.

Northern has said the first train will enter service soon between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport, with more units going into service throughout the year.

The overhaul has included new exterior paintwork, an interior refresh and a new passenger information system.

Alex Hynes, managing director for Northern, said: “It’s an exciting time for us and our customers as more of our services and routes turn electric. This investment is paving the way for us to deliver better services and more seats.

“Our investment in these trains represents our commitment to providing a great customer experience alongside this; not only are we bringing a fresh new look but we’re improving our customers’ journey and how we keep them informed.”

Northern will continue operating the franchise until at least February 2016 when a new long-term operator will be announced.
