BLS Cargo has ordered 15 new multi-system Vectron MS locomotives from Siemens for its cross-border services.

The Swiss freight and logistics specialist will operate the new units on the north-south corridor between Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands.

Delivery will be carried out in three phases. The first new locomotive is due to go into service in the second half of 2016.

Dirk Stahl, chief executive of BLS Cargo, said: “BLS Cargo has performed with the Vectron end of 2014, extensive testing and verifications on traction performance, multiple-unit operation, energy consumption, operability and maintainability.

“The overall concept of the Vectron has convinced us.”
