The First Vocational Qualification for Light Rail and Tram Drivers is Now Available

The first dedicated vocational qualification for light rail and tram drivers, the Level 2 National Vocational Qualification Diploma in Rail Services (Tram/Light Rail Vehicle Driving), has been launched following approval by awarding organisation, City and Guilds. The new qualification marks a significant step towards the development of unique competency standards for this specialist industry, which has made an increased contribution to the UK Passenger Transport Sector in recent years.

The qualification is the result of a collaborative project by light rail operators and GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council for passenger transport within the UK. The work is also based on the dedicated National Occupational Standards for the industry, which have set a tone for the content and shape of the qualification, again developed by GoSkills in collaboration with the industry.

Adrian Richards, Training Manager for First Tram Operations, has played a key role in the creation of the industry’s standards and new qualification. Commenting he said;
“Up until now, any validation of a tram driver’s achievement has been linked to the heavy rail National Vocational Qualification but now there is something specific for light rail and tram drivers that will build on our industry’s excellent training record and encompass the specific training needs of those that work in it. I am confident that there will be a significant take-up of the qualification within the company.”
