The restoration of St Albans South Signal Box by a local preservation trust has been recognised at the 2010 National Railway Heritage Awards, winning in the Structures section of the Invensys Signalling Award.

Over the past four years, the Grade II-listed Midland Railway box, built in 1892, has been transformed into a community asset. Donations of around £135,000 and a huge amount of volunteer effort have resulted in both the structure and its 44-lever frame being brought back from a state of dilapidation.
