Testing at the Edge

The first of four new 11-car Class 390s has arrived at Edge Hill’s traincare centre, with the other three due to be delivered during 2012. A six-month programme of testing and commissioning has now begun.

The train, built by Alstom, forms part of the Pendolino extension programme to deliver 106 additional carriages to the current fleet operating on the West Coast Main Line. Of the 52 existing Pendolinos, 31 are also to be lengthened from nine to 11 cars, providing more than 7,000 extra seats.

The additional vehicles are being manufactured at Alstom’s factory in Savigliano, Italy, although the power modules are coming from its site in Preston.
