The next phase of regeneration in Luton’s Station Quarter gets under way in February with demolition of the footbridge between Luton Railway Station and Station Road and the creation of a new staircase and ground-level walkway.

Luton Borough Council contractors have already begun advance works on the scheme, which will improve the pedestrian route between the station and Luton town centre.

The footbridge will be closed from Thursday 10th February, when pedestrians will be diverted via a disability compliant route along Station Road and Church Street. There will also be a signed route via Guildford Street on weekdays only.

Initial work on the footbridge begins on Monday 14th February, when full vehicle and pedestrian access to and from the station will be maintained with traffic management.

Demolition is due to take place overnight from Wednesday 16th February, when Station Road will be closed for safety reasons to vehicles and pedestrians approaching from Church Street. Access to Station Road will be maintained for pedestrians and taxis approaching from Old Bedford Road. Buses will be diverted to a temporary stop in Guildford Street.

Bute Street car park, including the exit into Bute Street, will be partly closed from 18th-22nd February.

The new route walkway and staircase are scheduled for opening for March 1st 2011.
