Coast road goes green

A second phase of track improvements has begun between Boston and Skegness – a route that has suffered from years of under-investment. The £21 million project will see the old track renewed, improving reliability and providing a better ride quality. Work will pause over the summer so as not to impact on the busy tourist period.

A third and final phase of track work is scheduled to start in September, running through to December. This year’s two phases will involve 73,000 yards of rail, 42,000 steel sleepers and 106,000 tonnes of ballast. It is intended that at least 50% of the rail as well as 9,800 concrete sleepers will be recycled from track renewal sites elsewhere on the network.

Improvements to Skegness Station, involving the demolition of redundant buildings from its front, have also got underway. These works are valued at around £400,000 and are being jointly funded through the National Stations Improvement Programme – a joint rail industry investment initiative – and Lincolnshire County Council. This work will finish in March.
