The charity received the £1,000 donation as a result of being nominated by John Wheatley, Dispatcher, Tees Valley, Freightliner Heavy Haul Limited.

Redcar and Cleveland Mind are a mental health voluntary organisation affiliated to Mind (National Association for Mental Health). The organisation began in Redcar in the late 1980s in response to an expressed need for a service for people with mental health problems managed by, and for, local people. Affiliation to National Mind and charity registration in 1991 enabled the charity to work within a network of support and shared values.

In response to local government reorganisation the charity became “Redcar and Cleveland Mind” in 1996, now with 120 members, 13 paid workers and 30 unpaid workers.

John nominated the charity to coincide with a sponsored walk he took part in for Redcar and Cleveland Mind. Despite the galeforce winds and rain challenging the walk 108 people walked 22.5 miles from Whitby to Redcar raising a total of £12,232. John Wheatley said: “It was a pleasure to raise this money for such a good, well run charity such as mind. Thanks to everyone who took part and a big thank you to Freightliner for their contribution.”

Samantha Picknett Redcar and Cleveland Mind said: “It was great that John nominated us, as mental health is one of the least supported causes due to the stigma that is associated with mental health problems. However, things are slowly changing and we are working in schools, colleges and with local businesses to challenge stigma and discrimination. Locally, we work with over 500 people supporting them through our day services and the donation will help us continue our work in the local community.”
