Northern Rail’s Arctic Husky Challenge

Maggie Whitaker and Emma Hind, who both work for Northern Rail, are training hard for the 250 kilometre Arctic Husky Challenge.

The intrepid pair will be joining other teams to sled across the ice cap from Norway to Sweden in April. Says Emma, ‘Myself and Maggie will be expected to erect our own tents, cook and take care of our own team of huskies – we have four each.’

The aim is to raise money for the children’s charity, Barnados which operates over 400 projects around the UK. Barnados works with more than 100,000 vulnerable children, young people and their families every year.

Says Emma, ‘We both believe Barnardos is a fantastic charity giving so many opportunities to young people. We are both looking forward to raising as much money as we possibly can. We do have a minimum target which we are hoping to exceed.’

The pair hope transport companies will step forward and sponsor the expedition. ‘We thought this particular challenge is something different that no one we know has ever done before. Personally I am not a big fan of the cold so this is a real challenge for me and definitely a once in a life time opportunity. We are now nearing our fundraising target.

‘Fundraising has included the Cheeky Chuffers Calendar, charity gig, bucket shakes, raffles and dress down days. Training has involved long sessions in the gym, swimming and hiking and playing netball. The expedition will be tough. 14 hour days include feeding, bedding and preparing the dogs, putting up and taking down tents, making hot drinks and generally helping around camp.

Although daytime temperatures in the arctic circle can be mild from April onwards night temperatures drop to minus 20 degrees. It’s a far cry from the Cheeky Chuffers dress down – if at all. Calendar copies are still available.
