Flying Scotsman to appear in wartime black

The Flying Scotsman, sole surviving A3 locomotive, is to appear in wartime LNER black when she emerges from the National Railway Museum’s paintshop in the spring, following a major overhaul.

The NRM is holding a Flying Scotsman preview weekend between the 28th and 30th May, when the public will have their first opportunity to see the locomotive in its temporary guise, before it is repainted into LNER apple green in the summer.

Dating from 1923, and purchased by the NRM in 2004, Flying Scotsman was the first locomotive to be officially recorded as achieving 100mph.

They were designed for main line passenger services, initially on the Great Northern Railway. The change in class designation from A1 to A3 reflected the fitting to the same chassis of a higher pressure boiler with a greater superheating surface and a small reduction in cylinder diameter, leading to an increase in locomotive weight.
