The Algerian Transport Ministry has awarded the FCC Group, the Spanish construction company, a contract worth €1.23b to construct a rail line of 66km.

The FFC Group, in consortium with Algerian construction company, Groupe ETRHB HADDAD previously won a contract worth €930m in May 2010 to construct a 185km rail line linking Algeirs with the provinces of Relizane, Tiaret and Tissemsilt.

The proposed rail line will link the city of Tlemcen with the frontier post at Akkid Abba and will form part of the planned line connecting Oued Tlelat to the Moroccan border which is expected to be completed in 2013.

This project is part of the Algerian Government’s economic development programme, with an infrastructure based budget of €110b.

Parts of the proposed route include rough terrain and so will require the construction of 34 viaducts and 9 tunnels, which will count for nearly 30% of the total length of the line.

The planned double-track electrified route allows rolling stock to reach maximum speeds of 220km/h. The contract for FCC also includes signalling and telecommunications systems and it is intended that the project will be completed by 2014.
