The President of the Regional Government of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, inaugurated the Metro’s new Line 2 section which connects La Elipa station to Las Rosas neighbourhood with four new stations.

The extension of Line 2 has been called the most important ‘Suburban Expansion Project’ in Madrid. Upon the commissioning of this new infrastructure, the Regional Government has provided residents them with a fast and direct connection to the Capital’s city centre, which can can be reached in just 20 minutes without transfers from Las Rosas to the Sol station.

The new section provides the residents of this neighbourhood with a direct connection to the Madrid city centre in just 20 minutes without transfers. 4.6 km of new tunnels and 4 additional stations in Line 2: La Almudena, Alsacia, Avenida de Guadalajara and Las Rosas, have been added.

“Over two years ago in November 2008, we placed the first stone of this Metro expansion, which is the most important Project in this Legislature due to its length, the number of stations and the major investment of €315 million,” the President said.

In just over two years fulfilling the foreseen periods, the Regional Government of Madrid has executed this ambitious project which involved the construction of 4.6 km of new metro line and the work project included the construction of the new bus interchange in the Plaza de la Alsacia, with direct connection to the second Metro Station.

This new expansion of Line 2 complements the works executed in the former legislature from Las Ventas station up to the former end of the line: La Elipa, which has thus satisfied the historical demand by the residents of this neighbourhood.

Consequently with the commissioning of this new section, Line 2 has grown 50%, from 8 km to over 12 km. Likewise, the inauguration of this new section has incorporated 11 new trains; as a result, Line 2 now has a total of 44 wagons valued at approximately €80 million.
