Following the announcement on 8 November 2010, Ansaldo STS announced that the contract agreed between its subsidiary Ansaldo STS Sweden AB and contractor SL, Storstockholms Lokaltrafik to work on upgrading the Stockholm Underground’s signalling system came into effect on Friday 25th March.
The contract – worth around €80 million – is for the complete replacement of the current signalling system on this line (41 km, 36 stations) and the on-board systems of 30 trains on the line.
The contract can be extended to cover also additional lines and trains and includes an option for ensuring maintenance for a maximum period of 25 years.
The project is due to be completed by 2014 and will be implemented without causing disruption in transport services.
The new signalling system employs state of the art CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) technologies, developed by Ansaldo STS. There is also an option to migrate to full driverless operation in the future.
