Amtrak bolsters security on rail network

Amtrak has begun the implementation of a new programme dubbed Partners for Amtrak Safety and Security (PASS).

This neighbourhood watch style programme is intended to bolster the security of the Amtrak railway network, which is primarily protected by the Amtrak Police Department.

The programme is intended to appeal to both passengers and rail enthusiasts and encourages them to notify Amtrak Police in the event of any unusual or suspicious events.

PASS will allow Amtrak users to register online to receive a membership card and instruction on how to report anything they feel could pose a safety or security threat.

According to Amtrak Police Chief John O’Connor, rail enthusiasts – or ‘railfans’ as they refer to themselves – are perfect as extra eyes and ears to compliment his department.

“Railfans’ interest often leads to a good knowledge of trains and tracks – leading to an increased likelihood of noticing something suspicious – and they are also already out watching railways across the country.”

The new PASS programme is based on a similar initiative by fellow American company Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway known as Citizens for Railway Safety (CRS).

Started on June 7 2006, CRS has since amassed more than 10,000 members who have reported a series of safety issues ranging from potential suicides to stolen equipment.
