Northern Rail has teamed up with environmental charities BTCV and Keep Britain Tidy to take on the job of tidying up railway stations across the north of England this spring.

The new scheme, launched as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Big Tidy Up campaign, will see Northern Rail employees volunteering to work with BTCV staff and local community groups to improve the green space around railway stations on the Northern Rail network, which runs 2,500 train services every day.

Yesterday, Handforth Station in Chester was the first station to get the Big Tidy Up treatment.

As well as general tidying and litter picking, the volunteers took part in activities such as clearing vegetation, weeding, planting fruit trees and bushes and building bird and bat boxes, all aimed at making the site more enjoyable for both those travelling by train and the wider local community.

Janet Ford, Senior Corporate Partnership Manager for BTCV said:

“Northern Rail and their employees are making a vital contribution by choosing to support practical environmental projects in and around their network’s railway stations.”

Karen Booth, Head of Sustainability, Northern Rail explains:

“We manage over 450 stations and get great levels of support from community groups who are keen to work with us to enhance the station environment and facilities. While litter picking is relatively easy, the long term impression that a clean and well cared for station gives is vital in ensuring we continue to attract passengers and develop rail travel across the north.”

BTCV is an environmental charity which inspires people and improves places through practical conservation work across the UK. The Big Tidy Up campaign is England’s biggest litter pick and Keep Britain Tidy’s bid to rid our neighbourhoods of rubbish.
