The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has awarded Siemens a contract to supply signalling equipment for the rail network in the province of Gauteng.

The €90m contract includes ’15 type Sicas S7 electronic interlockings’  which includes the interlocking for the busy Johannesburg Park Station.

Over 800 axle counters and 380 switch machines will be installed along with the upgrade of the communications network to meet signalling requirements.

The project is expected to be completed by 2016.

The contract covers the replacement of ‘obsolete’ technology which dates back as far as 1930.

All routes will be set and monitored electronically. A new control centre will also be built to control 70 interlockings around Johannesburg through an optical fibre network supplied by Siemens in 2010.

The new system will increase capacity, improve safety and reduce train delays.
