Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn AG (FW) has awarded Stadler Rail a contract to supply 5 low-floored multiple-unit trains.

The contract is valued at around CHF31m and the trains are planned to be in operation by summer 2013.

The trains will run on the narrow-gauge line in the ‘canton’ of Thurgau, linking the cities of Frauenfeld and Wil SG.

The units will have a low floor meaning easy access for passengers, along with air conditioning and ‘modern passenger information systems’.

Dr Bruno Gähwiler, President of the FW Board of Directors,said:

“As a train for commuters to Wil and Frauenfeld, and as an important connection between the localities on the line, FW will be able to meet the very latest standards.”

“With the new vehicles, FW is very well positioned for the future and for further growth in commuter traffic,” explains Dr Hansjürg Düsel, Director of FW.

The trains will be custom designed to negotiate the line’s tight corners and will have electromagnetic brakes.

This order is significant for Stadler Rail, explained CEO Peter Spuhler;

“It is a particularly special moment for me personally, to receive an order from my very first customer once again after 20 years”.
