New South Manchester Metrolink line added to map

A new colour has been added to Metrolink’s service map following the launch of the new South Manchester Line.

The map shows the different services that operate on Metrolink’s tram network, rather than just where the lines are and which stops they serve.

For example, there are two coloured lines on the Altrincham section, which shows that there are services that run to Piccadilly and services that run to Bury.

The map is on display in trams and at stops.

Susan Wildman, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Communications & Customer Services Director, said:

“Our colour-coded map is another example of how we’re helping passengers to make the most of the Metrolink network.

“It shows, very simply, where services actually run to rather than just which stops the different lines serve.

“It also shows where connections to other lines and services can be made – all of which helps people to understand exactly what journeys they can make on the network.

“That’s going to be even more important in coming months and years because we are in the process of trebling the size of the Metrolink network, which is going to open up more connections and more options for passengers.

“Colour-coding service patterns is a system that’s in use in cities across the world precisely because it’s such an effective and easy-to-understand way of showing the different journeys people can make.

“We actually launched the new map when the MediaCityUK line opened and we added the South Manchester Line to it this week. It will continue to grow, and change, as more new lines open and their service patterns are finalised.

“In terms of assigning colours to each line, we’ve simply tried to choose appealing colours that can sit comfortably next to each other and have sufficient contrast to help people distinguish between the different lines.”
