Queensland Rail is giving 3,000 Brisbane locals the chance to participate in a 5km fun run to raise vital funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The inaugural Queensland Rail Classic fun run will be a family-friendly, fun day out, with food, entertainment and attractions open to all entrants after the run.

Queensland Rail Chief Executive Officer Paul Scurrah said Queensland Rail was always looking for ways to support fantastic causes like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“The Queensland Rail Classic will become an annual event, providing people with a wonderful opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause while exercising, socialising, and enjoying the entertainment and attractions as well,” Mr Scurrah said.

“At Queensland Rail we have a strong focus on health and wellbeing, so I encourage not just our employees but the people of Brisbane to participate in the run.

“In the lead up to Bridge to Brisbane, this is a great chance for people to get involved in another fun run and treat it as a warm-up event.

“The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the world’s largest charitable supporter of type 1 diabetes research, and Queensland Rail will be proud to present the organisation with the proceeds from the run.”

The Queensland Rail Classic will take place at 8.30 am on 21 August at the Roma Street Parklands, commencing from Celebration Lawn.

The unique route will take participants through TransLink’s Northern Busway, which will be specially closed for the event.

Runners and walkers need to get in quick and register online to ensure they get a place – the fun run is only open to the first 3,000 people to sign up.

All proceeds from the 2011 Queensland Rail Classic registration will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
