Public transport in Birmingham running as normal after riots

Public transport services are running as normal following last night’s violence in Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

At 6:30pm last night a number of changes to bus services in Birmingham and Wolverhampton city centres were put in place.

All Birmingham city centre bound National Express West Midlands buses began terminating at the last stop on their route before the Inner Ring Road and did not travel into the heart of the city centre.

Diamond buses were also terminated at the last stop on the route before the Inner Ring Road

In Wolverhampton city centre, all National Express West Midlands buses terminated outside the Wolverhampton Ring Road and did not travel into the heart of the city centre.

Wolverhampton bus station was and remained closed throughout the night on the advice of police.

Rail and Metro services were running normally but West Midlands Special Needs Transport decided only Ring and Ride return trips in Wolverhampton should be undertaken. All other journeys were cancelled and passengers were informed.

At around 8:30pm National Express West Midlands took the decision to terminate Birmingham city centre bound services at least a mile or more before the Inner Ring Road and announced that all services across Birmingham would finish at 21.30.

In Wolverhampton all National Express West Midlands buses terminated outside the Wolverhampton Ring Road and services finished between 21:00 and 21:30.

Wolverhampton bus station was closed on the advice of police.

Diamond buses also terminated at the last stop on the route before the Ring Road.

In regards to other areas of the West Midlands it was announced that all National Express West Midlands buses except local services in Coventry and Walsall would finish their last journeys between 21.00 and 21.30. Services in Coventry and Walsall finished at 11pm.

Rail services were reported as running normally although only the main entrance to New Street Station was open.

It was also announced that the last Midland Metro trams to leave Snow Hill Station in Birmingham and those departing from Wolverhampton would be at 21:30 and would terminate at Wednesbury Parkway.

National Express West Midlands services are running as normal this morning although services are following minor road diversions at Dudley Road near City Hospital Birmingham, Trinity Road Birmingham and Dalaston Street/Road in Wolverhampton city centre.
