The temporary closure of Beal Lane in Shaw has been extended until Sunday 4 September, with the scale of work needed to strengthen the road now clear.

Recent Metrolink work in Beal Lane to lay new tram track across the former railway level crossing uncovered that more extensive highways refurbishment was needed than initially anticipated, leading to an extension of the temporary road closure.

Further investigation has revealed that the stone culvert beneath a large section of road at Beal Lane is in need of extensive repairs to ensure it can continue to bear the traffic load at this section.

Once this remedial work is complete, Metrolink contractors will lay tram tracks across the former railway level crossing, in readiness for Beal Lane to reopen to traffic on Monday 5 September.

Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink Director, Philip Purdy, said:

“During work to lay tram tracks at Beal Lane in Shaw, we found the River Beal culvert beneath the highway needed more extensive repairs than anticipated.

“Further assessment work has now revealed that the culvert will require a 12-cubic metre concrete cap to strengthen a large section of the road.

“As the culvert is underneath the highway, initial surveys could not have identified the full extent of the remedial work needed to ensure the road could bear all traffic on this busy section.

“Throughout the process, we have worked very closely with Oldham Council to assess the culvert and co-ordinate the necessary remedial work so the road can be opened again as soon as possible.

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this temporary road closure may cause but I can assure everyone this work is essential, not only for Metrolink but for all traffic in this area.”
