A British Transport Police officer from Brighton was last week presented with an award for Outstanding Personal Contribution at the National Rail Awards Ceremony.

Nominated by Southern Railway, Brighton’s PC Steve Jarvis was recognised for his exceptional, individual contribution to policing and his work with Rail Neighbourhood Officer Teams in Brighton, where he works with Southern as a member of the Safer Travel Team.

PC Jarvis, who received his award from BBC Newsreader and Journalist Michael Beurk, was chosen from a huge and varied selection of entries to go through to the fiercely competitive short list of 18.

Judges described him as “inspirational”, and said that his enthusiasm and commitment are unbelievable and that his core belief that it is not enough to go through the motions, epitomises everything this award represents.

After being presented with the award Steve said:

“I was genuinely surprised to win the award, especially given the excellent contributions made by my fellow nominees.

“I went along to the ceremony thinking I wouldn’t win anything; that I have had a nice time and it is fantastic to have got this far.

“I was gob-smacked when I heard my name called out, but totally made up.

“This award reflects the professionalism and dedication of the officers I work alongside and I couldn’t have achieved what I have without the support of my colleagues, it has been a pleasure working alongside Southern Railway.”

Steve has been described by colleagues and bosses as an outstanding and professional officer, London South Area Commander Steve Morgan said:

“I would like to pass my congratulations to Steve, who has devoted a tremendous amount of his time to policing the rail network in Brighton and fully deserves his award.

“The award recognises Steve’s outstanding work and arrest rate, coupled with his dedication, passion for the job and his excellent partnership working with Southern Railway.

“Thanks to his help engaging with and developing the Rail Neighbourhood Officer Teams at Brighton, they are now extremely successful.”

PC Jarvis is also in the running for this year’s Rail Safety Person of the Year at the RailStaff Awards.
