Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering has just won the Innovation Award 2011 in the South East Region Constructing Excellence Awards.

The project now goes forward to the National contest to be announced on the 25th of November.

Balfour Beatty is the principle contractor for Network Rail’s rebuild of Blackfriars station.

The Blackfriars rebuild is part of the Thameslink programme, which will see longer trains and more frequent services on the route between Bedford and Brighton.

The Blackfriars Project Team deployed several imaginative and innovative techniques across this major operation, driven by a combination of programme constraints, stakeholder operational requirements and the need to protect the travelling public, all delivered within a highly confined project footprint of 27,500m2.

The planning and project controls meant the station has been able to stay open with no reduction in passenger traffic during the major part of the working week.

Derek Rees, Regional Director for Constructing Excellence and Chief Executive of the South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE), who managed the Awards Scheme, said:

“The sector has always thrived on finding creative and innovative solutions to challenges on-and off site. The Blackfriars Project showed that we can achieve the most incredible results using grounded knowledge, collaborative R&D and measured risk.”
