Award winning apprenticeship scheme in the spotlight

A new innovative and award winning approach to apprenticeship training is currently proving a hit with young people from London and industry experts alike.

The scheme has been developed in partnership between Tube Lines (a subsidiary of Transport for London – TfL) and national training provider Train’d Up, and delivers in-house training and support in the workplace for apprentices aged between 16-24.

The apprenticeship course recently picked up a commendation award from the National Apprenticeship Service in partnership with City & Guilds, and Tube Lines is now listed in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers 2011.

Louise McCallum, General Manager at Train’d Up said:

“We felt there was a better way to deliver apprenticeship training. The traditional apprenticeship model meant that apprentices had to spend a large part of their time away at College and away from their workplace.

“This could often lead to a ‘them and us’ culture. Our new approach was to develop a company focused model that delivers high quality accredited training that takes place in the employer’s workplace.

“This creates a single team culture from day one and ensures a closer affinity between apprentice and employer.

“The delivery model was developed in partnership with Tube Lines and uses their state of the art training facility at Stratford.

“Tube Lines employees were heavily involved in shaping the work programme and they are able to input directly in to the training as the programme develops.”

Steve Norris, Skills and Competence Manager at Tube Lines said:

“The Tube is the oldest and largest underground metro system in the world, having helped Londoners about their daily business for nearly 150 years.

“Working in partnership with London Underground, we’re transforming it into a transport network fit for the 21st century.

“In order to be successful in what we do, we need highly trained, motivated people to join our team. We have a strong, positive culture within Tube Lines and we want to ensure that everyone who works with us is able to benefit from this.

“This new partnership approach to delivering high quality in-house apprenticeship training ensures that those young people who walk through our door feel as much a part of the Tube Lines team as someone who has worked here for twenty years.”

Samantha Mansour, Graduate and Apprentice Manager at Tube Lines said:

“We were delighted to pick up the recent Chartered Management Institute (CMI) training management and development award, covering our apprenticeship training programme that we provide in association with Train’d Up.

“This recognises both the hard work that our team invests in training and development, as well as the commitment of the young people who apply and undertake the apprenticeship.

“Our excellent training facility at Stratford is where we deliver a large part of our training.

“The centre is fully equipped with classroom facilities for the intensive safety instruction that apprentices will receive.

“However, we also have a signal school track area which gives us the ability to deliver high class hands-on training in a safe and secure environment.

“The centre enables us to provide all levels of the apprenticeship curriculum in-house so that the learners integrate fully into Tube Lines.”

Louise McCallum, General Manager at Train’d Up added:

“We use skilled trainers who have a sound occupational background and up to date industry experience.

“By working closely with Tube Lines, we can ensure that the curriculum is of a high quality that meets the needs of the learners, but also flexible enough to meet the practical needs of the employers.”
