Rail services affected by severe weather in Scotland

Following the poor weather conditions on Thursday 8 December, rail services are still being affected today in Scotland.

Yesterday, trains were reduced to speeds of 50mph and many services were cancelled or heavily delayed due to the weather.

National Rail Enquiries’ website states that most routes are open and running ‘a normal service’ but some services are still affected.

On the Inverness – Wick/Inverness – Kyle of Lochalsh route, trains are being replaced by buses.

Services between Glasgow Queen Street – Fort William have been completely cancelled with no replacement transport available.

Buses are also replacing trains between Fort William and Mallaig and the Glasgow Queen Street – Oban service has been cancelled.

Trains are running between Inverness and Keith and between Aberdeen and Inverurie but buses will replace trains between Keith and Aberdeen also between Inverurie and Inverness.

East Coast, First Transpennine Express, CrossCountry and Virgin Trains are running a normal service to and from Scotland.

Passengers are advised to check the National Rail Enquiries website as more services are also disrupted.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said:

“We will have over 350 engineers out on the network working to keep the railway running.

“However, the extreme nature of the conditions, and the impact they can have on our infrastructure, means that a speed restriction is necessary in the interests safety.”
