Last week marked the second anniversary of the start of Southeastern’s high speed services with passenger numbers continuing to grow.

In the second year of operation there has been an additional million passenger journeys compared to the first year of operation, now totalling 8.2 million.

The service has ‘expanded to meet local passenger and stakeholder demand with additional services starting from Maidstone West in May and then subsequently from Sandwich and Deal in September’.

Similarly the service ‘proved vital to the successful hosting of The Open at Royal St George’s with 37,000 spectators travelling by train’, highlighting what East Kent has to offer.

The opening of Turner Contemporary, Marlowe Theatre and Folkestone Triennial has also brought more people to Kent.

Charles Horton, managing director, said:

“We continue to be pleased with how the high speed service continues to grow.

“This year we have responded to passenger and stakeholder needs and have introduced new services from Maidstone West, Sandwich and Deal and we are grateful for the support of Kent County Council, local MPs and other stakeholders in making this possible.

“The service continues to prove popular with 89% of passengers telling the independent Passenger Focus satisfaction survey they think it is good or very good.”

There are 164 million journeys made on Southeastern every year or, on average, approximately 570,000 passengers travelling on the train every weekday.
