Two Leeds Sergeants who disarmed and arrested a knife-wielding man on the rail tracks in Kirkstall, Leeds, have been commended by the British Transport Police (BTP) Chief Constable.

Sergeant Robert Pedley and Acting Sergeant Mark Mowvley were commended for their brave actions during a ceremony at Force’s London Headquarters on Friday, 16 December.

Certificates of Commendation are awarded by the Chief Constable to police officers, rail staff and members of the public who have shown special zeal, courage, skill and resourcefulness in the detection of crime.

The two were called to the railway tracks close to Redcoat Lane, Kirkstall, on Tuesday, 31 August 2010 shortly after 9pm, after a report of a highly dangerous man on the tracks.

A police helicopter was deployed and located the man on the tracks in possession of a knife.

The railway line was shut while Sgt Pedley and Sgt Mowvley, together with West Yorkshire Police officers, approached the man.

He was disarmed and arrested immediately and taken into custody.

As a result trains were stopped causing delays of over two and a half hours.

Chief Constable Andy Trotter said:

“This courageous act is a testimony to the professionalism of the officers involved. Their fast actions helped minimise any danger to the public, themselves and as little disruption to the railway.

“I am very proud to be able to congratulate and commend them for their brave actions.”
