Within the boot was a blue plastic box full of shredded paper, containing the two nine-year old tortoises – a male Greek Thigh Spurred variety and a female Marginated variety.

Constable Kristene Mikkonen, based at Lincoln railway station is appealing for their safe return.

She said; “As well as being valuable, the owner and I are concerned for the safety and well-being of the reptiles.

“I would appeal to anyone who has knowledge of their whereabouts or any information regarding those responsible for stealing the car to get in touch with BTP as a matter of urgency.

“Also, anyone who is offered tortoises in unusual circumstances should report it.”
