Train station ticket machines ‘confusing’ rail passengers

Rail passengers are finding ticket machines at stations ‘confusing’, says consumer watchdog Which?

Which? said that some machines ‘displayed unhelpful or meaningless information’ and some ‘failed to show the price of different tickets’.

The survey was carried out in November 2010.

Results from the survey showed that up to 15% of passengers buy their tickets from machines at the station.

The survey found that some ‘information buttons only repeated unhelpful guidance on screen’.

Some machines also failed to show travel time restrictions  and ‘none of the five companies’ machines described a London Travelcard in the same way’.

Which? asked the Association of Train Operating Companies for their comments.

A spokesperson said: “Hundreds of thousands of passengers use ticket machines every day with no problems.

“But train companies know there are always ways to improve, and are working hard to make the machines more user friendly.”
