Officials have said that at least 49 people have been killed and over 600 injured in a train crash in Argentina.

The incident, at Once station in Buenos Aires, happened during morning rush hour as the train hit the end of the platform.

Transportation Secretary JP Schiavi said:

“We assume that there was some fault in the brakes.”

Many passengers were trapped in the wreckage, but it is thought everyone has now been removed.

It is thought the train was travelling at around 12 mph and hit the barrier, crushing carriages behind.

This incident has been named as the worst train accident in the country since 1970.

In September last year, 11 people died when a train in Buenos Aires hit a bus crossing the tracks. It then hit a second train coming into a station.
