A green-fingered ScotRail employee has been awarded an MBE for his efforts to brighten up Aberdour station.

Trevor Francis, who has manned the station’s ticket office on the south coast of Fife since December 1993, has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his tireless services to the community.

In his spare time, the 67-year-old spends up to six hours a day nurturing the station’s floral displays.

Trevor, whose honour was recommended by the Aberdour community, said: “From day one, I took ownership of the station, but it was not just about that. It was about the community, the village life and helping people.

“When told, it was ‘wow.’  It has fulfilled my life, and I cannot thank the community enough.”

Trevor lives in Burntisland with his wife Rosemary, 62, and has two sons.

In 2005, his dedication to improving the station’s environment was rewarded with an accolade for Best Station Garden at the Community Rail Awards.

Trevor’s work has inspired other stations on the Scottish network to follow suit, including Ladybank, Linlithgow and Haymarket.

The father-of-two added:  “It’s a lovely role and one I’m not giving up on it yet. It’s a joy to keep the station well maintained and to see the pleasure that the displays give.”

Before joining ScotRail at the age of 47, Trevor had worked as an aircraft fitter with the RAF, a mail sorter and a funeral director.

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail’s managing director, said: “Everyone is delighted. The honour is thanks to all Trevor’s hard work. It is a great example of what can be achieved, and just shows how important a role he and the railway plays in the community.”
