The last of 20 new Translink NI Railways Class 4000 trains arrived at Belfast docks today.

The arrival of train no.4020 completes the £114 million order funded by the Department for Regional Development and continues the introduction of Class 4000 trains onto the local rail network.

The final train will be subject to rigorous testing before it enters public service later this year and all 20 new trains will be fully commissioned and in service by the end of 2012.

Translink NI Railways passenger numbers have risen by over 70 per cent in the last 10 years.

Known as the Class 4000, this next generation of trains will replace all the older trains currently in service. They will operate alongside the existing C3k trains delivering an entirely modern fleet to cater for the growing customer demand.

Speaking at Belfast docks, group chief executive Catherine Mason said: “These new Class 4000 trains are being manufactured to the very latest industry standards, meeting the highest standards of performance, comfort, safety and accessibility.”
