MTR has been ranked top of the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong-based rail operator, which is currently bidding for the Essex Thameside and Thameslink franchises, has been awarded an AA+ rating – the highest rating ever given an eligible company.

Jeremy Long, CEO of European Business at MTR, said: “Sustainability is an integral part of what MTR does. We look at rail over the long term, focusing on the needs of today’s passengers, tomorrow’s commuters and the communities which our railways serve.

“There is an increasing emphasis for train operators in the UK to have a strong environmental and societal sustainability strategy.

“We are already applying the lessons learned and innovations developed in Hong Kong to improve the sustainability of UK rail, and want to build on this good work.”
