Coupling sensors used in Mars Rover exploration

Listen to this article

Load senses similar to those found in railway couplings around the world have been installed in NASA’s Mars Rover Curiosity.

More than 40 customised sensors have been supplied by US-based Strainsert for latest exploration.

The sensors played a major role in the spacecraft separations – including the cruise stage, heat shield, descent stage, ballast masts and rover – as well as the retention of the wheels, high-gain antenna, camera mast, robotic arm and mechanisms retaining two spare drill bits.

Strainsert’s standard and customised load cells, load pins and force sensors have a number of other applications in research, testing, weighing and control in the aerospace, military, marine and automotive industries.
