The state of Connecticut is to receive $120 million to complete construction of the Hartford section of the New Haven to Springfield line.

U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari announced the funding as part of the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail program yesterday (October 1).

Porcari said: “This investment will mean increased speeds, reduced delays and added capacity along the New Haven to Springfield corridor.

“It’s good news for rail travelers and for the regional economy, and it’s one more sign of President Obama’s support for rail projects in New England and across America.”

Improvements to the corridor will reduce travel time between St Albans, Vermont, and New Haven, Connecticut, by more than one hour.  The project involves installing 10 miles of double track, upgrading a signal system on a portion of the line, and making improvements at 28 road crossings.
