A specialist bomb disposal squad was called out to diffuse three pipe bombs which were discovered on rail tracks just 10km away from Tatanagar station, India.

The bombs were found under the fishplate of tracks near Burudih level crossing on the Tata-Badampahar route under the Chakradharpur railway division.

A railway employee, Budhu Karwa, contacted the Tatanagar railway authorities after spotting wires around the tracks while on patrol.

Sources in the South Eastern Railway (SER), which looks after rail routes in the region, said: “Three powerful pipe bombs kept by suspected Maoist extremists on railway tracks to blow up a passenger train, were recovered from Burudih area under Potka police station in East Singhbhum district, around 10km from Tatanagar station.”

Station Superintendent R Choudhary told the media that the three bombs and attached gelatin rods were “defused immediately”.

An investigation has now been launched.
