Indian Railways has scrapped a real-time train tracking system developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Kanpur in favour of its own software.
Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation (SIMRAN), which was launched six months ago on 36 trains as a pilot scheme, was going to be rolled out across all trains running in the country over the next 18 months.
The project is now expected to be given to Indian Railways’ IT service unit, Central Railway Information System (CRIS).
To inform the users, IIT-Kanpur posted a message on the SIMRAN website: “As per decision of Railway Board in a meeting held on September 11, 2012 at Railway Board this site has been closed on October 1, 2012. SMS Service which was running on 09415139139 is also closed.”
