Work is continuing to return full service to New York’s subway network following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Although services have now been returned to most lines, engineers continue to pump seawater out of the L train tunnel under New York’s East River.
Pictures released by MTA show the city’s subway cars being loaded onto flatbed trucks to be taken to the Rockaway Peninsula, Long Island, where they will be used to create shuttle trains, which will run until full service can be restored.
In the aftermath of the storm $13 million was made available by the U.S. Department of Transportation to aid the cleanup operation in New York and Rhode Island.
The total cost of the damage caused by the super storm has been estimated to be as high as $100 billion.
