Eurotunnel has received 253 million euros compensation, four years after a fire closed the Channel Tunnel, leaving thousands of travellers stranded.

On September 11, 2008, a fire broke out on a heavy goods vehicle several miles from the French entrance to the tunnel.

Thirty-two people who were on board the shuttle, which was transporting the vehicles, had to be evacuated into Eurotunnel’s service tunnel.

An agreement for compensation totalling 253 million euros has now been reached after Eurotunnel and its insurers agreed a payout of 223 million euros at the end of last year.

The fire was the third in the tunnel since it opened in 1994.
