Funding has been approved for preliminary work to be carried out into the electrification of a key section of Latvia’s railway network.
The European Union (EU) has pledged 1.4 million euros to the project, which once complete, will improve speed and reliability of trains on the network.
The electrified section will run between Rezekne and Daugavlis to Riga, Jelgava, Tukums and Ventspils, crossing the Rail Baltica – a trans-European link between Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
The EU’s contribution will allow the technical specifications, environmental impact assessment and the investment plan for the works to be drawn up.
The project, which will be managed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency, is set to be concluded by September 2014.
