The EU has pledged half a million euros to conduct a feasibility study into constructing a new rail link between terminals at Malpensa Airport in Italy.
The proposed 3.4 km line would connect Terminal 1 with Terminal 2, which is currently only accessible by road.
A Trenord-operated service – the Malpensa Express – currently runs between Malpensa Airport and Milan.
The Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency, which was set up by the European Commission to help fund trans-European transport projects, said: “The studies will look at the transport demand, pricing evaluation and revenue analysis whilst at the same time performing an analysis of the legal and tax constraints, as well as drafting contractual arrangements and regional acts necessary to launch the tender and construction phase.”
The study, which is set to be completed by July, will look at the possibility of using a public-private partnership to fund the new link.
