India to award freight corridor contracts in next few months

Reviewing the development of the Dedicated Freight Corridor project, Indian Railways has said it will be awarding contracts for railway track works over of 1,000 kms in the next few months.

The decision was made at a review meeting between the Indian Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, chairman of the Railway Board Vinay Mittal and R K Gupta, managing director, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL).

The development of dedicated freight tracks will relieve pressure on existing freight routes and allow for the development of passenger services.

Indian Railways said that 8,000 hectares of land over nine states and 61 districts has been acquired in the last three years and the remaining 18 per cent is also progressing steadily.

The project has been funded by World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) – among others.

“The commissioning of the entire project is scheduled to be by December 2016 for both Eastern and Western Corridors stipulated at the time of approval of the project were also reviewed in the light of the subsequent developments of requirement of environmental clearances, processes involved and the ground realities encountered in the project implementation,” Railways said in a statement.
