Officials from the Brazilian state of Ceará have visited Fortaleza to see how rail infrastructure projects in the city are shaping up ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Ceará’s infrastructure secretary, Adail Fontenele, and World Cup secretary, Ferruccio Feitosa, witnessed firsthand the work being carried out on the VLT Parangaba-Mucuripe extension – a 12.7 km line, connecting the city centre and the waterfront.

The existing freight line which runs through the city is being upgraded to allow passenger services.

“Working together to maintain the pace of work and ensure delivery of the population of Fortaleza VLT within [the] estimated [time]. This is the main reason for this visit,” said the secretary Adail Fontenele.

Fortaleza is one of 12 host cities which will welcome the the international football community next year.

The party visited Parangaba Station, and the sites of proposed stations in the Montese and Vila União districts.

As well as the sites visited, works are underway at Pontes Vieira station, the Vieira viaduct bridges, Archbishop Louis Papicu Station, and the station in Mucuripe.

“The work of VLT keeps walking and now, especially with the partnership of the City of Fortaleza, the project goes well, on schedule,” said Adail Fontenele.

The state government has pledged $200 million toward the project.

Construction began in 2011 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
